Heading west to Potshot, Arizona, a wealthy retreat for Los Angeles millionaires seeking respite from their hectic lifestyles, Boston private investigator Spenser returns. Once a rough mining town, Potshot has transformed into a sanctuary for the elite, but its newfound peace is threatened by a modern-day gang led by a mysterious figure known as The Preacher. This gang of outcasts preys on the town, extorting its residents while the local police stand idly by.
Spenser is hired by Mary Lou Buckman, a beautiful woman who suspects that her husband was murdered for refusing to pay protection money to The Preacher's gang. With no witnesses and little cooperation from the incompetent police chief, Spenser enlists the help of his reliable allies, including Vinnie Morris, Bobby Horse, Chollo, Bernard J. Fortunato, Tedy Sapp, and the formidable Hawk. Together, they must outsmart the gang in a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
The Buckmans, originally from L.A., had moved to Potshot to start a small outdoor tour business. Mary Lou's determination to uncover the truth about her husband's murder propels Spenser into a treacherous investigation. As he delves deeper into the underworld of Potshot, Spenser discovers the complexities of the town's power dynamics and the lengths to which The Preacher and his gang will go to maintain control.
Armed with his wit, courage, and a team of loyal friends, Spenser navigates the dangerous landscape of Potshot to bring justice to the Buckman family and restore peace to the town. But as tensions rise and danger lurks at every corner, Spenser realizes that defeating The Preacher and his gang will require more than just physical strength—it will demand cunning, strategy, and the unwavering loyalty of his comrades.
